Redefining Whistling as a medium for Indian Classical Music through the Carnatic Tradition.

About
Arun  Perunkolam

Carnatic Whistle Artist

I grew up learning Carnatic vocal music and became fascinated by the smallest details - the way a phrase moves, the emotion inside a raga, and the subtle nuances that make each note come alive.

At some point, I found myself wondering:

Could a Whistle carry the same depth and expression as a classical voice?

That question stayed with me.

What began as curiosity slowly became a journey of experimenting, practicing, and discovering how Carnatic music could find a new voice through whistling. Over the years, I explored how vocal phrases, gamakas, and the expressive nuances of Carnatic music could be translated into this unconventional medium.

Today, my work is centered around a simple idea:

To explore how whistling can become a meaningful medium for Indian classical music while staying true to the depth, discipline, and beauty of the Carnatic tradition.
